The Macy Art Gallery at Teachers College Columbia University is a unique exhibition space dedicated to supporting lively artistic communities both within and beyond the walls of the Art and Art Education Program at Teachers College Columbia University. Each academic year the Macy Art Gallery hosts an active lineup of exhibitions, predominantly featuring the work of Art and Art Education Program students and faculty. In addition to student and faculty work, the Gallery also hosts a handful of notable traveling and special exhibitions each year.
The Macy Art Gallery Fellow must have an interest in exhibition planning, collections care, and 2-D, 3-D and new media art installation. Furthermore, the Macy Art Gallery Fellow should be interested in supporting their fellow Art Education students, faculty, and visiting artists in presenting and preserving their work. The Macy Art Gallery Fellow assists the Gallery Coordinator to develop all aspects of the Macy Art Gallery itself, all the while ensuring an inviting and highly productive gallery environment for the community. The Macy Art Gallery is jointly operated by a Gallery Coordinator and two Gallery Fellows (I and II), all of whom are supervised by a full-time faculty member with day-to-day direct supervision by the Art and Art Education Program Manager. While the Macy Art Gallery Coordinator promotes leadership towards fulfillment of the gallery goals, the relationship between the Coordinator and the Fellows is a collaborative and collegial one.

Gallery Operation:
- Maintain a clean gallery and office space including organized artwork and supply storage systems
- Assist with the installation and deinstallation of each exhibition including painting, prepping, hanging, shipping, storing, and other related, often physically strenuous tasks
- Assist with the reorganization and renovation of spaces as needed
- Assist with replacing or repairing equipment, tools, and other materials as needed
- Ensure that all visiting and student artists follow appropriate guidelines and safety measures when using gallery tools, equipment and supplies
- Assist with maintaining the Macy Art Gallery permanent collection by ensuring excellent storage and inventory systems and assisting with the lending of work throughout the TC campus
Exhibition Planning and Programming:
- Utilize the Macy Art Gallery shared Google Drive folder to organize all files related to exhibition planning and programming including photographs of installations and receptions
- Support the Macy Art Gallery Coordinator and the Art Education office staff to plan, staff and photograph each exhibition reception plus any other related gallery events or celebrations
- Stay abreast of current trends in best exhibition practices and technologies
- Assist with maintaining a social media and web presence if applicable and in conjunction with expectations set up by Art and Art Education Program
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate student in the Art and Art Education Program.
- Basic (1-2 years) experience working in commercial, community or higher-ed studio art environment.
- Desire and ability to learn about gallery administration, collections management, curatorial practice and exhibitions management
- Interest in supporting artistic development and exhibition opportunities among TC students, faculty, alumni and outside visiting artists.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs on a daily basis.
- Excellent judgment and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctoral student in the Art and Art Education Program.
- Extensive (2+ years) experience working in gallery or museum environment coordinating and mounting exhibitions
- Prior experience with art handling, conservation, or collections management
Salary Range:
$18.00 - $20.00 / hr
