Posting Summary:

The Hollingworth Science Camp at Teachers College, Columbia University, is seeking an experienced and engaging Head Teacher for our Summer Science Camp. The Head Teacher will lead classroom activities, foster a positive and inclusive learning environment, and support the academic and social development of students. This is a short-term summer position from June 20- July 30, 3026.

Job Summary/Basic Function:

The incumbent will be responsible for filling in for head teachers in any one of the eight classrooms at camp.

Maintain a safe and positive classroom environment:

  • Ensure all students feel welcomed, respected, and supported.
  • Monitor classroom behavior, establish clear expectations, and address conflicts or challenges in a constructive and positive manner.
  • Foster a classroom environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and collaborative play.

Plan and implement the Hollingworth curriculum:

  • Deliver engaging, age-appropriate lessons provided in the Hollingworth curriculum
  • Integrate enrichment opportunities that support academic, social, and emotional growth.
  • Adapt lessons as needed to meet the diverse needs of students.

Collaborate with and mentor Assistant/Associate Teachers:

  • Provide guidance, support, and feedback to assistant or associate teachers.
  • Model effective teaching practices, facilitate teamwork, and ensure consistent implementation of classroom routines and procedures.
  • Lead collaborative planning sessions to ensure all team members are aligned on lesson objectives and student support strategies.

Professional Development & Collaborative Growth:

  • Attend training sessions and staff meetings to enhance teaching skills and stay updated on best practices.
  • Share insights and collaborate with colleagues to continuously improve program quality.

Set up and break down classroom:

  • Prepare learning materials, classroom spaces, and activity areas to support daily lessons and activities.
  • Ensure all spaces are safe, organized, and ready for student use.
  • Assist with cleanup and organization at the end of the day.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience teaching elementary-aged children as a lead teacher in their own classroom
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced camp environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with students, parents, and staff
  • Ability to foster a collaborative and positive team environment
  • Ability to develop and implement creative, hands-on learning activities
  • Experience with supporting social-emotional learning and student well-being
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing schedules, student needs, and camp activities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Arts degree or in progress
  • Experience mentoring or coaching other teachers or staff

Salary Range:

$26.00 /hour
